Hualien – aboriginal village

A-chen and Alice left me in the aboriginal village Sinshe on Thursday evening.
A doctor YuXiang and his wife GongGong are mostly taking care of me now. They have two wonderful children, a boy GongYu and girl SheiYuan. II stay at their friends house YangCong 2 km far from the village. That’s a bit difficult as I have to either ride a bike to the village or someone has to drive.me, but the house is OK and YangCong very kind although he cannot speak any english
I was lucky as on Friday their elementary school ( where are only less then 20 children and 10 morel in kindergarten) had a kind o f celebration. I had to get up before 6 am as there was a 2kilometers run in the morning. The celebration took all.day, But i got to.meet many people from the village which usually do not stay here during week as they work in Hualien or maybe Taipei.
There were different contests and games for students and also people from the village. I tried dancing some traditional aboriginal dance, throwing a fishernet or cutting the banana “wood” to get a fibre from which they make clothes, hats and so on.
The day was tiring, very hot but fun. The old people invited me to have some food with them, they were really very nice although I could just say that I cannot really understand. In the eveningGwe went to the only restaurant here for dinner which was really delicious. The whole organisational team assembled there and they were drinking a lot and toasting all the time. I met with the owner of the restaurant A-Zhen who is a sister of YuXiang. She is very nice person who offered ne her own bathroom that I had warm water. She also offered to cut my hair as she was before a hairdresser in Taipei.

New adventure

Today I packed my things and I am off to the east coast to meet with Alice and a- Chen. I will stay one night in jilin and tomorrow Alice will introduce me in the aboriginal village where I am going to work in a seafood restaurant. I a bit nervous and a bit excited. The aborigines might not speak very well English if they do at all. I will need to use my poorchinese. But it’s gonna be an adventure.
I am looking forward to see achen and Alice an calls the jilin Prince a-chiang again! Drink tea and talk. A-Chen.has a girlfriend so I am interested to see at least get picture as she work in Taipei.

We had a dinner with the principal on Wednesday. I was a bit afraid as she can it speak very much in English, but she invited some other teachers as slain, Irene, Jonas and my dear calligraphy teacher Yicai. They talked a lot in Chinese so I could relax. However still I could talk a little with yicai and I was really glad for that as he is extremely nice person.
On the weekend I went for a trip with Elaine and her husband. We visited a temple Qing Shui Z.. S.. Miao this one issue 200 years old and the works carvings and all decorations are very delicate. The colours are not.so.Bright and gaudy probably because it is old temple.

Then we went to another famous spot in Tahitian the White Chicken mountain. There is another temple but more new. A lot of volunteers work here and pray.also the can cleans your body and soul with a prayer and an insent
There is a trail that you can walk and go above the temple to a little forest. I have taken here this photo.I like it as it looks as the Chinese paintings, the nature but there the little teacher walk I g up the path. Actually they stepped into the photo but I like it more this way.

Afterwards we met with Rosemary and her husband in an American style restaurant. She was energetic as always although she had some health problems. She urged that she wants to take me somewhere to see the stars at night. We went to one mountain above taoyuan. From This spot you could see the sea and the airport. But No.stars at all ))).

In the morning I went with Daisy to see the Asian Pacific deaf games in takewondo.. I did not know that Taiwanese at these official events have to use a different name Chinese Taipei and cannot use their national.flag as the chi.we would protest against it.
But at least one good thing, the female champion from Taiwan won the gold medal!

Another travel begins

Hello,

long time no post:)

I have decided to travel again, and as I’ve so badly missed Taiwan, it was my first choice. So on 21st September I said my goodbyes to everyone in Europe and took the plane to Taipei.

The travel was long as I could not sleep on the plane and I was not in the mood to watch movies. However one of my neighbors from Dubai to Taipei was quite interesting. He was a TV producer from Chile traveling to Taiwan to do some business. We talked for a while and I taught him some Chinese

The travel went smoothly (however it started badly already in Brno where I missed the bus to Vienna :D) and after 19 hours I set my feet on Taiwanese ground again.

Elaine was there to pick me up from the airport. It was soooo good to see her again and we both shed a tear or two. I was so happy as I though probably I would never come to Taiwan again. We had a dinner together with Rosemary and Peter and Irene and then went to a school to meet Sarah. I will be staying in her appartement for two weeks.

As I am writing this after a week here I do not want to go to details. I had a wonderful time since I arrived, I’ve met teachers from school and also my friends, students that graduated from school already. I will give some lessons to students in these two weeks and then head to Hualien to meet with Alice and A-Chen.

There was a typhoon on Monday, my first in my life. It was not one of the most severe they had here however two people died. They say every time some people die during typhoon. But we stayed only at home and did nothing, just slept and ate. There was a typhoon holiday on Tuesday as a part of Taoyuan was without power for the whole day. I was very sad as I could not go to school and give lessons, and also as I should have had few hours of art class with YiCai.

Here are some pictures that we took with my friends, students that I know from last time…

I love Taiwan!

Saying goodbye sometimes really hurts. But it’s inevitable… So the day finally came, when I have to pack all my things, and head home. I’m sad, because I had really wonderful time here and I met many interesting people and now I’m afraid that I won’t see them ever again… I really fell in love with Taiwan. The time here flew so quickly, but on the other hand I feel like I have been here much longer. It’s because I experienced so many things and met so many people, did many things, saw many places and ate a lot of food:)) I think I really enjoyed every single moment here! And it’s truth that now I am a bit tired…

I really want to bring so many things back home to share them with my family and friends and to also keep the memory of Taiwan more fresh in my mind. You have to think I’m crazy,, but I really packed 10 kilos into a package and sent it home. And in this package there are 2 kilos of rice, noodles, soysauce, “togan”… So I can’t wait to receive that package!

I packed my things for maybe 3 hours! I am not good at that, and also I hated the thought of leaving….. For lnch we went with my family to a good restaurant, a little more spice food. In the afternoon I went with homepa and Jamie to play basketball in the park, but it was so hot, that we were sweating heavily after a while. Then we also played cards at home and enjoyed the last moments together. For lunch we had my favourite beef roll, and also dumplings and noodles. I ate a lot, just to take something home.

At 9pm we went to the airport. And what a surprise! Elaine and her husband came here to say goodbye to me! I was so shocked that I started crying again. She brought me 2 mangos for my journey:) When was the time to say goodbye I cried again, and finally I made Elaine cry too! later she wrote me that she cried really hard until her husband told her to stop it

The plane took of at 22:45, and in Dubai it was at 5 am (time in Dubai = 9am in Taiwan). I had to spend 12 hours waiting for the next flight. That was really exhausting. I couldn’t sleep much and I didn’t want to go outside of the airport, because I was really tired and I had many things in my hands. So I just wondered around the airport, tried many perfumes…. before 5pm I finally boarded the plane to Vienna and it took another 6 hours to get there.

Now I’m home… it’s strange to continue your life where you left it after experiencing so much… But this is reality and I have to fight it. I hope I can keep in touch with my friends in Taiwan, and also that I can go there again and soon! I really LOVE Taiwan – tea, food, mountains, sea and ocean, but most of all PEOPLE! Thank you for everything and also thank you for following my blog. I hope you enjoyed it and also got some information. Taiwan is a good country to visit, so don’t be afraid to go there!

I will miss you!!!!!!

The very last trip

On Saturday Allen, Hayley, Henry and Eason took me for the last trip to a part of Taipei, Zhoufen. We enjoyed ourselves during the trip to the old street which gave probably an inspiration for the town in film Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi, really wonderful walking the crooked street. We tried a lot of food there famous for this spot.

I am sorry that I did not manage to write this article right after our trip, now I can hardly remember everything we have done and seen. However I really appreciate my dear friends who took me there and were so kind to show me around. It was a splendid day!

Last days at school

On Friday I had to wake up early and head to school at 7.30. They asked me to say some words in front of nearly all the students. The AIESECers also came and had a short speech. I was so nervous, not about talking in front of all 1st nad 2nd graders but because I was afraid I will cry hard again in front of all of them. Because Joe from AIESEC wrote me this the other day in the evening I had no time to prepare anything, so I just said something that was in my brain. But after a few sentences I really started crying! They prepared some video for me to remember some moments, so I continued to cry even more. Then some of the students wanted to say goodbye personally so they came to me and gave me some cards or hugged me.

I don’t like these big things, but maybe it was good way to say farewell to so many students. I like them all a lot!
In the morning I also visited the 310 (Elaine’s home class) and 114 (Sarah’s home class), and gave them my photo and some sweets. With exchange students we wanted to record some of the chinese dancing and kung-fu, so here you can see how beautiful we looked. I don’t have the video now, so you have to wait for it…

IMG_8148

I was invited to see the traditional music club at during lunch brake. That is something very interesting, and I like the traditional instruments. One of them looks and also sounds a little like our cymbalom! Then there are “er-hu” (two strings) and “peepa” (something like a cithera).

IMG_8158

I said goodbye personally in some classes like in 205:

205_7

the class leader of 205

Teachers took photo with me and gave it to me signed, that I can remember them. I had to pack all my things in the office, it took whole two boxes! I had a phone call from A-Chen, that he is going back home and that he wants to give me some tea, because he totally forgot about it the other day. And after school I had appointment with art teacher YiCai, because I wanted to visit his flat. He designed it by himself and it’s really beautiful. There are some modern parts and some wonderful ancient peaces from old dynasties. One whole wall is for books only, and those are only about calligraphy and chinese paintings. Then he has a lot of paintings and calligraphy on the walls, some of them made by old masters, some his own.  I really like his home, it’s peaceful and beautiful.

IMG_8176 IMG_8171

We sat for two hours talking about paintings and calligraphy and his home. I had to run, because he would give me so many things if I stayed any longer! He gave me some brushes, papers, hard ink, inkrest, wooden box for scent and blank paper fans. He is so generous and kind person. After this I had to go to shcool for my things, which I left in 308. And we sat for hour with Eva, YuanYuan and ZheWei, just talking and making fun… I’m gonna miss them so much!

It was hard, but I had to say my last goodbye to the school and leave… I had so many things that ZheWei gave me a ride on his scooter. In the evening he wrote me he is learning it for one week!!!! I’m gonna kill him next time I see him!!

Hualien – unexpectedly wonderful trip

On Monday afternoon I set up for the trip to Hualien county, the east coast. Everyone was telling me how beautiful place it is, so I didn’t want to miss it. I am really not sure how everything happened, I had just good luck again and wonderful people around me – so in the end Claire remembered that one of her students studies and works in Hualien and asked her to help me. I didn’t have to find accommodation and also they promised to take me around there.

The only thing you have to do when travelling so far is to make reservation for the tickets (online) or go buy it in advance, because there are many people who do the same and then you would have to stand maybe for 4 or 5 hours if there were no left seats. So I went to Taipei by local train and then took an express towards the east coast. I was going to stay in Ruisui, place bit more south from the Hualien city, so it took one more hour to get there.

At the station a young boy picked me up, his nickname is A-Chen, and he works at a tea farm. His friend and also a boss A-Xiang met as later and took as to the place I was going to sleep – a small house for friends to sleep over. In the evening we drank a lot of tea in their teashop and I really enjoyed their company. A-chen can speak English really well, although sometimes he didn’t know how to explain something to me, A-Xiang’s English is worse :)) The girl Wing, who is the student of Claire, joined us later.

A-Chen prepared some green tea, oolong tea, honey black tea and their speciality – pomelo black tea. He was very surprised that I can sense the taste of tea very well. ALso when I tasted the honey black tea, my first reaction was that it is similar to the Oriental beauty. And I was right, the process is similar – leaves are eaten by a kind of bug, but this one is a black tea and Oriental beauty is oolong. I drank so much tea that I couldn’t fall asleep till 2 am!

In the morning I had to wake up early, before 7, but I was so tired, that it was very hard. Fortunately A-Chen also overslept In the morning we went to Yuli, a nearby town, to pick up Alice and have breakfast. Alice is an English teacher, she taught in a cram school for 10 years, but then she said enough and gave up her job and started living here in Yuli in a place they call GeekTopia. She is very interesting person, she travels a lot, mainly because she loves MotoGP! So maybe in the future she will visit Brno and we can see each other again.

For breakfast A-Chen took us to eat miso soup! I never imagined that it could be good for breakfast but it was delicious! Together with soy bean milk and egg omelet! After that we went up to the mountain to meet A-Xiang, who was playing basketball in an aboriginal village in the mountains. The place was so peaceful and the view of the mountains wonderful. I could also see the east part of Jade Mountain – the tallest one in Taiwan. Next time I want to go and climb it (it takes maybe 2 days to get to the top and 1 day down).

IMG_8021

the east side of Jade Mountain (in the middle)

After that we were so tired that we went to my place and lied down for 2 hours For lunch we had some rice dumplings. It was raining a little, so they said it is too dangerous to go to the famous spots as Taroko gorge, that there are falling stones and the path is very slippery. Instead A-Chen took me to a small tea factory to see how the tea is made. I really never thought about the tea making. So now I know that you can make green, oolong and black tea from the same tealeaves, only the procedure is different. There are 2 main tea trees, so you have to choose wisely which is good this year to make f.e. green tea, which would be better for black tea… The first step is to dry the tea leaves by hot air. They were drying one box of leaves so I could smell the beautiful smell of the tea leaves.

In the afternoon we took also A-Xiang and his girlfriend Serena and went to the seaside. I could finally see the Ocean! It was really splendid, even though there was a big wind and the clouds were heavy with rain. We spend an hour running into the waves and playing in the sand.

IMG_8054

A-Chen and A-Xiang

IMG_8023 IMG_8037 IMG_8035IMG_8041

The waves on the sand are very white and look like a beer foam! It is a myth that every time a mermaid dies (because she has no soul) she becomes the seafoam, and here it really looks like that

IMG_8032

Afterwards we went for dinner. That was also something. A normal restaurant for farmers and fishermen, with very fresh fish and seafood! I tasted not only the yellow tuna fish sashimi, squid, but also fish eggs and fish milt. Everything was so delicious!

IMG_8077

After dinner they took me to see the hot spring. This one is old, from the time of Japanese domination, it’s name is An-tong. There were some baths you can take outside without paying, but after a while it started raining so we decided to go to the hot spring hotel. We did not have swimming suit, so we had a bath in separate tubes. If you have swimming suit you can take a bath in the outside, Japanese style pools. I enjoyed the bath for more then 35 minutes It was so relaxing.

IMG_8083

the photo is not good because there was not enough space to take it, but this is how the private bath looks

They took me also to the Geektopia, a small house, which is the seat of their doings. These people try to revive the life in this region, to bring more young people to live here and work here. It is hard, because most of the people here can work only as farmers, and there are no big companies (and then kind of hospitals, because this region is good for rehabilitation), so not many young people want to stay here.

IMG_8103

I made them a new poster (the Chinese one is saying something like “drink a lot while you are young:D )

On Wednesday we woke up early again and went for Alice. While eating breakfast we met a young farmer, their friend, who said he will accompany us to the mountains in the afternoon. They wanted to walk part of the Walami path in the mountains.

We left Alice to sleep after breakfast and A-Chen took me to see a hidden waterfall. That place was wonderful. We had to go on foot a while and climb a little to get there, but the place was so charming, hidden in the steep rocks with very fresh air and so peaceful. We enjoyed ourselves here for maybe an hour, just throwing stones to the small lake and building a rock tower.

IMG_8086

For lunch we went to an Italian restaurant owned by one of their friends. I had some pasta with crams, and it was really good. Another of their friends Yung-Ching, accompanied us for the lunch and also to the mountains. He stays in Geektopia for a while and he si doing a research about aboriginal tribes. His wife and child live in Taipei. He has a strong connection to the nature here, but what I could see many people like the nature and they appreciate it very much.

The Walami trail lies in the Yushan National Park, high above the Nanan river. Along the path there are some high waterfalls, suspension bridges and wonderful lookouts. In the subtropical forest, or jungle, you can hear many birds and if you are lucky also see monkeys. I did not see them but when we were climbing the road by car, others could see some monkeys The nature here is so raw, you should really try this! But next time I’m going to climb the Yushan (Jade mountain)!!

IMG_8109

The first suspension bridge – Alice is not the only one afraid to pass it!

IMG_8107

IMG_8123

In the evening they asked me to cook something czech for them! It was so difficult o decide what should I cook, because many of the ingredients are difficult to find and also the taste is bit different. I decided to make “bramboráky” (potatoe pancakes), hokkaido pumpkin soup and sweet dumplings. Usually we make the dumplings with strawberries or apricots, but we couldn’t find anything like this here, so I filled them with some plum-looking fruit and with chocolate+banana. The banana ones were really good! A-Chen and Yung-Ching helped me in the small kitchen while everyone else was eating! But we had a lot of fun and we enjoyed it. We finished and cleaned the kitchen it was nearly 11 pm. I had a little beer with Yung-Ching but because A-Chen was driving and he wanted to have a beer, we decided to go back to my place and buy a beer in 7/11. I Have never been shopping in a store around midnight! I never realized that 7/11 is nonstop!:D We talked until 2 am and drink beer. It was a nice time!

In the morning A-Chen picked me up and we went to the train station. A-Xiang bought us breakfast and also Wing came to say goodbye. They accompanied me to the platform. When I sat in the train I started crying for an hour Those people who I met just 3 days ago are so close to my heart. I was really sad that I have to leave them…. Thank you for taking such a good care of me, I’m really glad that I’ve met you!

IMG_8132

A-Chen, Wing and A-Xiang my dear guides!

I arrived to Neili around 2 pm, went home to take a shower and then went back to school, because in 308 they asked me to come. I wanted to say some words to them but I just started crying and it was too difficult. Eva prepared a song for me, which she will sing at the final singing contest. It was in chinese but it was very sad and beautiful. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHXr4bBxHCo)

308_4

After that I went with them to play volleyball, till the end of school. In the evening we went to Zhongli with ZheWei, Eva, YuanYuan and YuRou (Nicol) to a night market. We tasted a lot of things again, like the tasty chicken ass, pigblood cake, some noodles, and also we tried snake soup. I have to say that snake soup is not very good. It tastes sweet and the snake meat is dry and a little like fish. I think one time was enough! We met Alex, the EP from Canada and spend a while together, making him taste many things. It was fun , because I tried them before and now I was the one who knows what it is and who can laugh at the reactions.

Thanks for the last time at the night market! I’m gonna miss you so much:(

Yingge – famous ceramics

On Sunday I asked my homefamily to go to Yingge. It’s not far from Neili and it’s a district of New Taipei city located on Dahan river. Yingge is famous for its pottery for more then 200 years. You can get there by train from Taipei and it takes maybe one hour. We drove car, because it lies on the southwest side of New Taipei city and that’s pretty close to Neili.

We went through the Old street, where are so many shops one next to other. You can buy some cheep ceramics here or also find expensive artistic pieces. If you have more time you should visit also the Ceramics Museum, where you can admire real art. You can also try to make your own cup in one of many DIY shops. Sometimes there is needed reservation for that, maybe 2 weeks before. After you make a cup they deliver it to you burned and finished in two weeks.

An old burning place – a tunnel were was sett a fire and the pottery was burned

In the evening I went to the train station in NEili, to meet up with some AIESECers, because they asked me to go for the last dinner together.. What a surprise when two boys from AISEC came riding their scooters and said we have to go further to Taoyuan by scooter! I was a bit afraid and a lot excited, because that was one of my wishes, to ride a scooter here! And it was really great. The scooter drives are a bit crazy here, they zigzag between the cars and ride dangerously. But it was really cool!

We had dinner together with another 2 EPs like me – Kimberley (from Mauricius but living in Canada) and Jing (who is Korean but lives in Canada too). Then we went to night market in Taoyuan to eat something more. Later also Alex, another EP from Canada, joined us, because he just arrived to Taiwan. The night was long and I arrived home around 11pm.

Nantou – Sun Moon Lake

On Friday morning I set up for a journey to Nantou with Elaine. We wanted to visit her hometown and see the famous Sun Moon Lake, which is situated in the central part of Taiwan. After more then 3 hours spend in a car, we arrived to Puli, a small city in the Nantou region. Elaine took me to a chocolate shop. A man started this shop many years ago, taking inspiration in japanese chocolates. But I think some were similar to those we can buy in Belgium. Of course very interesting and special was green tea chocolate. This town was small, and the people were looking at me a lot, because there were not many foreigners:))

24

After that we went to the mountains to meet with her father. Elaine’s father is more then 70 years old, but he travels from Taipei to Nantou every week and takes care of his banana plantations in the mountains. He is so energetic!

19

He accompanied us to the plantation. There are many different kinds of bananas and he grows 4 of them. I remember there were short and fat ones, which have very soft skin and also soft and mild taste, then short and thin, looking like fingers, green bananas, red bananas… I never imagined that there are so many different kinds of bananas! And they are much more tasty then those we can buy in CZE.

13

There are not only bananas but also bamboos. I love the bamboo forests, it looks so beautiful. You can find bamboo everywhere, and it makes the shape of forests very interesting and more plastic. On the photo is one of the largest species you can find.

17

You need to take care of the banana trees. Cutting old leaves is one of them. Every time the tree has grown bananas, it dies and a new tree has to grow from the roots. And yes, it is really fun cutting the leaves

21

34

We also picked some sour fruit, to stir fry it and add some sugar. It was really very sour but juicy and I liked it.

IMG_7898 IMG_7901 IMG_7903

Banana, papaya and mango tree

We stayed in her fathers house for one night. The house was big and the 2nd floor was in japanese style, so we had our “otoman” and slept on the floor, but actually it was comfortable. We cooked our dinner – fresh bamboo shoots with pork, stir fried green garlic, fried rice, cucumbers and I prepared pumpkin soup. We drank some kind of liquor made of rice and wheat. It was really strong, around 40 % alcohol. And we played karaoke and sang:)) It was raining heavily, so in the whole house echoed the rain drops falling on the roof. And after the rain many frogs were “singing” good night for us:)

, 08 06

Next morning we woke up early and went to the Sun Moon lake (RiYueTan) near Yuchi township. The name originates in the shape of the lake, the east part looks like a sun and the west part resembles the moon. This area is the home for Thao tribe, one of the aboriginal tribes in Taiwan. First we have visited the WenWu temple, a Confucius temple. It is a large structure with 3 separate halls. On the second floor of the front hall is a shrine devoted to the First Ancestor Kaiji and the God of Literature; the central hall is devoted to Guan Gong, the God of War, and the warrior-god Yue Fei; the rear hall is dedicated to Confucius.

35 38 47  IMG_7947

We were lucky that we got up early, because around 9 am there came buses with chinese tourist and they were suddenly everywhere! At least we enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere at the temple. A place where were a lot of tourist was this stone. They lined up to take a picture with the writing “Sun Moon lake”, and they were so noisy, that I have to say I don’t like chinese tourists. They are also usually rude.

59

Next spot Elaine took me was this Ci-En pagoda. She waited for me in the car soI had to climb more then 150 stairs to the pagoda and then another 160 to the top of the tower. The pagoda was built by Chiang Kai-Shek in memory of his mother in 1971. The pagoda is 46 meters tall and built in traditional style. There is wonderful view of the lake from the top of it. Really worth climbing.

IMG_7972 IMG_7976 IMG_7996 IMG_7994

The lake has very unique color, very beautiful blue. But it was a bit cloudy so the photos don’t look so good as it was in reality. There are many hiking trails around the lake, so if you have more time you can go around the lake and enjoy more the nature and the splendid views.
